Development of American Sports Zone in Mont-Saint-Guibert

In 2014 we learned the infrastructure of Louvain-la-Neuve Phoenix Baseball & Sofball Club would be demolished to make way for two hockey fields. Since that day a committee of LLN Phoenix and in particular Stanislas Sobieski have made every effort to find a new home. It quickly became apparent that the place required would require a much larger investment than originally planned. CS Mont-Saint-Guibert (football club) also needed the renovation of its grounds. A wild idea then emerged: why not develop a sports zone oriented on American sports?

After three years of planning and discussion between the different leagues and stakeholders, the project was presented to the Walloon Minister of Sports Infrastructure Mr Pierre-Yves Dermagne. It is therefore with great joy and immense relief that we announce on Friday 17th of March 2017 the latter has signed the subsidy that will allow the first Belgian American Sports Zone of Mont-Saint-Guibert to see the light!

Three disciplines will cohabit on the same game area. A synthetic multi-sport field dedicated to baseball, soccer and American football will soon emerge from the ground, in place of two existing soccer pitches.”When we look at all the road we have traveled and the pitfalls we have encountered for several years, we can only be proud of the project!” Said Julien Breuer, alderman of Sports at Mont-Saint-Guibert.

Minister Pierre-Yves Dermagne, granted the project a grant of € 1.175 million, out of a total estimated budget of € 1.45 million. “When we saw the quality of the dossier, we have responded favorably” said the Walloon Minister. “It must also be seen as a multidisciplinary investment since it will allow three sport disciplines to evolve in modern infrastructures.”

Work should start within a few months and last 12 to 16 weeks. The official inauguration is scheduled to take place next spring.
